What is Our Fascination With All Things Vintage?
We love vintage clothing, antique stores, old houses, and period movies. There are vintage restaurants, classic cars, interior design trends such as industrial, and old farmhouse. Phrases like “doing it old school” are popular and usually said in a positive way.
Vintage is used to describe something too old to be considered modern, but not old enough to be antique. Like me. This is a trend that never really goes away. The decades of popularity change, but there is always a group to embrace the concept. When I was a kid, it was all about poodle skirts, leather jackets, sock hops, and ‘50s music. Now the high school girls have embraced the boho look: flowy tops and dresses, flowery prints, and uneven hemlines, which is decidedly ‘70s to me.
So what’s with that? Each generation has its challenges. Sometimes we just need to get away from it all. If we borrow the fashions from an earlier era, can we slip into their time just for a moment and be someone else? Retro clothing tells us of stories from long ago. It makes us feel connected to our roots. It’s comforting.
It’s also about inspiration. There isn’t much that is totally new. We borrow ideas from the past and modernize them for today. There are all sorts of exhibitions and events featuring vintage items, some with the single intent of inspiring designers.
Do you feel a sense of nostalgia and peace when you look at old photos from your childhood? Or look at even older photos of your parents and wonder what their lives might have been like when they were young? Looking back at what we view as a simpler time—no cellphone, no internet--when kids played outside and mom baked pies from scratch (maybe) gives us just a little respite from the frenetic world we live in today.
It’s fun to do modern vintage-style photos exactly for all these reasons. How cool is it to see yourself in another time period? It’s like playing dress up with a modern spin. For this little sliver of a moment, we can escape the pressures of our everyday lives.
